Hardened Structures - Genesis Series Underground Shelter Systems

Genesis Series
The “NEXT GENERATION” of Underground Shelter Systems
The Hardened Structures "Genesis" series was developed for military applications and due to high customer demand for an Underground Shelter System that surpasses technical specifications offered by current shelter manufacturers to TRULY mitigate a wide variety of potential threats and disasters, including TEOTWAYKI (the end of the world as you know it) scenarios, while maintaining a very high level of safety and security.
To meet market demand, Hardened Structures formed a special design and engineering team comprised of leaders in the field of Structural Engineering, Electrical & Mechanical Engineering, EMP, Systems Engineering, and Architecture. This specialized team took over 6 months to design the NEXT GENERATION of Underground Shelter Systems called the "Genesis" series.
The "Genesis" series represents the strongest, safest, best designed and built Underground Shelter System in the world. Features include:
  • 3 Bar blast overpressure protection
  • Multiple Seismic Events
  • 100% waterproof
  • Blast doors
  • Fully Protected against EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) and HEMP (High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse). Fiberglass shelters cannot offer EMP/HEMP protection, see more at the bottom of the page.
  • 100% rust resistance (zinc anodes)
  • The best military grade NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) air filtration system available in the world (Temet)
  • Integrated emergency escape hatch
The Genesis Shelter System can be expanded to unlimited occupant loads and delivered and installed almost anywhere in the world. The "Genesis" series incorporates a modular approach .There are four main components to the Genesis series that can be purchased separately or combined together to form a Genesis community configuration:
  • Living Pods
  • Central Gathering / Dining Pods
  • Power Pods
  • Central Dome
Single Genesis Living Pods can be purchased to suit small families offering a very high level of safety and security.
To increase capacity or to offer a separate living, eating, and central gather area, the Genesis Gathering/Dining Pod can be added, thus increasing space and comfort for prolonged usage periods. This is a very serious consideration to examine when purchasing an Underground Shelter System.

By adding numerous Genesis Living and Central Gathering/Dining pods, safety and comfort can be provided for a small community.
The following pictures provide a realistic view of the interior space of the "Genesis" units. Interiors can be easily re-designed to accommodate client specific requirements. The technical specifications will not change, only the interior layout.
The Genesis Living Pods can be added to the Genesis "Dome" - thus offering a very comfortable, spacious community accommodating between 50 to 150 people and can be connected in series to allow for an unlimited number or occupants. The Genesis Dome offers the very same technical specifications as the Genesis Pods to form a community that offers safety and security unparalleled by any other shelter product in the world.
By adding on an additional Dome and Living Pods, this community can easily grow to 500 to 1000 people for durations in excess of 8 years - offering a true TEOTWAYKI structure built in 1/3 the time it would take for a custom design and construction. This benefit alone will make the Genesis Series the product of choice for the residential, commercial and military markets.

Several fiberglass subterranean shelter manufacturers claim that their shelters are HEMP/EMP protected and are MIL-STD-188-125 and MIL-HDBK-423 compliant. THIS IS NOT TRUE! If your shelter is not comprised of a conductive surface (i.e. metal) then it CANNOT be HEMP/EMP protected.
Electromagnetic fields pass right through fiberglass without attenuation (indeed – many antenna coverings and radomes are actually MADE OUT OF FIBERGLASS – because electromagnetic fields pass right through them! Even if painted with conductive coatings, fiberglass shelters will not protect you against EMP threats.
If you are considering a fiberglass shelter, then you are eliminating any possibility of protecting yourself from an EMP, because an EMP shelter has to be specifically designed and fabricated out of metal (preferably steel, for low-frequency performance) with each and every penetration engineered to keep out EMP energy. IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING BUYING A FIBERGLASS UNDERGROUND SHELTER FOR EMP PROTECTION, YOU ARE BUYING YOURSELF A TOMB!
This is why Hardened Structures provides quality steel enclosures – so that we can protect you from as many threat scenarios as possible – including EMP threats.
If you are going to invest in a shelter, ONLY a quality Hardened Structures steel shelter can protect you and your family from a broad spectrum of disaster scenarios that includes HEMP and EMP protection.
Do your homework on HEMP/EMP protection – here is what the U.S. Military; MIL-HDBK-423 specification says about HEMP/EMP protection:
The HEMP/EMP shield serves three functions as part of the EMP barrier:
  1. It prevents potentially damaging radiated electromagnetic stresses from an EMP event from reaching sensitive equipment inside the protective shelter by field reflection and attenuation (HS Comment: this is something fiberglass cannot do).
  2. HEMP-induced transients on exposed metal pipes and electrical conductors are deposited on the outer shield surface by the actions of point-of-entry protective devices and prevented from entering the protected volume by the skin effect – (HS Comment: whereas with a fiberglass shelter – the energy is conducted right INTO your shelter through pipes and wires and into your sensitive equipment!)
  3. The conductive shelter shield limits the number of ways that electromagnetic energy can enter the facility. (HS Comment: With a fiberglass shield there are unlimited ways in which electromagnetic energy can enter the facility)
The conductive steel shield is the primary element of the electromagnetic barrier. The shield, exclusive of the penetrating conductor and aperture treatments, consists of the metallic enclosure portions of the electromagnetic barrier. The role of the shield is to exclude electromagnetic fields from the protected volume of the facility. The conductive shield acts to reflect the incident fields and severely attenuate those fields and currents that penetrate into the metal. (Comment: in other words, fiberglass cannot be an EMP shield!)
To be effective, the shield must exclude or greatly attenuate incident electric and magnetic fields. To accomplish this, electromagnetic shielding surrounds a volume with a conductive layer that is thick enough so that highly-mobile electrons can arrange themselves and produce surface currents and charges that oppose the incident fields. This is the Faraday cage principle. External electric fields perpendicular to the surface are terminated on surface charges that form on the shield as its free electrons respond to the incident field. The tangential electric field is shorted and reflected by the conductive shield. Magnetic fields perpendicular to the surface induce eddy currents in the shield's surface. This, in turn, produces a magnetic field that opposes (i.e. "cancels") the incident field in and beyond the shield (inductive magnetic shielding). The tangential magnetic field induces current on the shield, which in turn produces a magnetic field that adds to the incident field (field doubling). (HS Comment: The end result is that with a steel EMP shield – you are fully protected from an EMP, with a fiberglass shield YOU ARE COMPLETELY VULNERABLE TO AN EMP)
The essence of a good shielding layer is the maintenance of good electrical conductivity, or low resistance, over all portions of the surface. Leakage through a shield surface occurs to the extent that voltages develop across resistances or impedances in the surface, and these voltages act as sources to reradiate fields into the interior of the shielded volume. The bulk of the shield surface will be made up of metal sheet. (HS Comment: Fiberglass has high-resistance over all portions of the shield – it optimizes the transmission of EMP energy into the shield enclosure!)
From MIL-STD-188-125-1:
"4.3.1 Facility shield. The facility HEMP shield shall be a continuous conductive enclosure (i.e. NOT FIBERGLASS) that meets or exceeds shielding effectiveness requirements of this standard. The shield is normally constructed of a metal, such as steel or copper. Other materials may be used if they can provide the required shielding effectiveness and are fully compatible (HS Comment: Fiberglass is NOT compatible, nor can it ever be made compatible) with the Point-of-Entry protective treatments and grounding requirements."
Listen to the company with Professional Engineers that build HEMP/EMP protected shelters for the U.S. Military!
Hardened Structures STRONGLY recommends that if you do not purchase a steel shelter that includes HEMP/EMP protection that you make sure you do not make a possibly critical error in your protection and survival plans and purchase a non-conductive fiberglass shelter – it could be the worst mistake you ever make and ruin even the most carefully thought out disaster preparedness plans.
Buy a steel shelter than can be configured to protect you against HEMP/EMP events, Hardened Structures will help you choose the right shelter for you, those important to you, and the components/equipment that will make your disaster preparedness plans work for you.

Hardened Structures is A World Leader for TEOTWAYKI Mitigation Shelter Design, Engineering, and Construction.
We have successfully completed many TEOTWAYKI shelters, have more currently underway, and are also working with TEOTWAYKI book authors and experts on their own TEOTWAYKI shelter projects.
As a specific Threat Event, the anticipated catastrophic effects resulting from TEOTWAYKI are far greater than the anticipated effects from WMD's, anarchy, climate change or any of the other specific Threat Events for which we have developed mitigation designs.
In general, the shelter should have independent sources of water, sewage, fuel, electricity, HVAC, food and supplies and all critical systems must include two back-up redundant systems. In some circumstances, the shelter location should be concealed from view and, to the extent reasonable, all air intakes/exhausts are to be camouflaged. The shelter should incorporate a minimum of two secret emergency exits. The design and construction of the shelter must be in accordance with the International Building Code (IBC). See attached TEOTWAYKI PDF download.
Threat Assessment: While the shelter will be designed and constructed to mitigate the anticipated effects of a TEOTWAYKI scenario, no one knows for certain what, if anything will actually occur. However, most engineers and scientists agree that for a fully protected TEOTWAYKI shelter the following threats must be mitigated:
  • 3-Bars blast overpressure of 45 psi
  • Force 10 earthquakes in succession
  • 450 mph winds
  • Extreme gamma & neutron attenuation from a 100 megaton air burst detonated 20 miles away
  • Solar flares with 1,000,000 volt EMP
  • Flooding (complete submersion for 100 hours)
  • Extreme external fires at 1250 F for 10 days
  • Magnetic pole shift
  • Radiological, chemical and biological weapons
  • Forced entry and armed assaults
  • 12' of snow and 10' of rain
  • 500 lb. hail stones or flying debris at a speed of 100 mph
The shelter will generally function as a stand-alone underground "HARDENED" Structure. Self Rescue supplies and Emergency Escape man-ways and extraction procedures should be considered in the basic design - which will allow radical movement of the structure in extreme surface conditions.
If this shelter is forced to the surface it must be capable of surviving all of the above threats absent the protection of earth coverage. Post Attack Recovery Plans specific to the facility's function/capabilities are to incorporate the anticipated after-effects of the Threat Event and allow for occupant survival and sustainability.
Our 30 years experience as engineers, architects and project managers in the shelter design/build industry has convinced us that the possible effects from a catastrophic TEOTWAYKI Threat Event demands a Shelter Protection Program of a Herculean nature.

The Genesis Series was specifically designed for Military applications and also will mitigate most TEOTWAYKI scenarios. Hardened Structures also uses exclusively Temet military equipment in ALL Genesis products sold through-out the world. Temet is known as the world's top manufacturer of specialized military shelter equipment to governments and military worldwide.
The perspective of the HARDENED STRUCTURES Team¹ as Architects, Engineers, Physicists, Future-Scanning Analyst and Ex-Navy SEALs has provided a unique ability to design client specific shelters to meet almost evey type of TEOTWAYKI threat event scenario.
Recently, scientists using NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope uncovered a never before seen phenomenon at the center of our galaxy, possibly testifying to a past "large and relatively rapid energy release - the source of which remains a mystery."
¹ The Hardened Structures Team is comprised of independent, licensed and specially trained design firms and general contractors.
This effort requires the generation of new future-scanning functions and theoretical work in the area of anticipatory analysis for the development of adaptation and resilience strategies.
While the effects of conventional threats such as Earthquakes, Storms, EMP, Blast Overpressure, Chemical, Radiological and Biological Weapons are well established and readily mitigated, the possible effects of a Mayan TEOTWAYKI Threat Event Scenario required Hardened Structures to expand theoretically the analysis of anticipatory threat identifications and mitigation measures.
Some of the anticipated effects of TEOTWAYKI scenarios include:

Magnetic Pole Shift

For reasons that are still debated and not fully understood, according to geological records, the Earth's magnetic poles have traded places about 170 times in the past 76 million years. With at least 14 of those reversals occurring in the last 4.5 million years alone. The symptoms of a coming pole shift typically are abrupt changes in weather patterns and a rapid weakening of the planet's magnetic field - both of which are happening now. There are several Threat Event Scenarios resulting from this magnetic pole shift including:
  • Tectonic shifting
  • Increase in volcanic activity both above ground and underwater
  • Global glaciations of the northern hemisphere
  • Floods and giant snowstorms
  • Increase in coronal magnetic eruptions (CME) from the Sun
  • Earthquakes and landslides
  • Severe storms
  • Significant loss of cropland and population center disruption
While the solar cycles and magnetic pole reversals are very real and have occurred previously, this has have never happened while 6 billion people inhabited our planet - with the vast majority of those people dependent on the electrical power grid. Regardless of your specific interpretation of this Threat Event Scenario, Hardened Structures has already compiled numerous design mitigations for the effects of magnetic pole shifts.

Solar Flares and Sun Spots

Astronomers have determined that the sun experiences regular cycles of intense magnetic storms known as sunspots or solar flares, caused by coronal magnetic eruptions (CME), averaging in duration about 11 years each. According to NASA, the end of the last sun storm cycle ended on March 10, 2006 when all solar flares on the sun became quiet - signaling an end to the most recent sunspot cycle. This also marks the beginning of the next cycle which, according to the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder Colorado, will be about 30 to 50 percent stronger than the previous one. They predict the most intense date for the solar flares to be late in TEOTWAYKI, coinciding with the Mayan calculations for the sun's galactic alignment. Because this phenomenon has never occurred with the population and technology we have today, no one knows for certain what effects these solar storms may have on our future. What we do know for certain is large influxes of energy from the sun drive extreme weather patterns causing hurricanes, tornadoes and blizzards. This influx of energy is what creates La Nina, El Nino and the incredible display of the Northern Lights.
Based on future scanning theoretical and anticipatory analysis, Hardened Structures has devised several worse-case scenarios and has formulated designs and plans for mitigating each scenario. A 50 percent stronger solar cycle could be catastrophic and result in huge, Katrina-size storms one after another. The results would be complete power outages, bridges and roads destroyed, oil refineries destroyed, communities devastated, infrastructures ruined, lives lost and the possible collapse of our economy.

Electromagnetic or Geomagnetic Pulse (EMP)

An Electromagnetic Pulse can be generated by either a nuclear EMP attack or by solar storms called a Geomagnetic EMP. A severe solar storm can produce geomagnetic storms when combined with Coronal Mass Ejections (CME). CMEs produce huge clouds of plasma that generate strong magnetic fields. In 1972, a 230,000 volt transformer in Canada exploded when rapidly shifting magnetic fields caused by solar weather induced excessive current in the grid. On March 13, 1989, millions of homes and businesses were plunged into darkness when a solar storm caused a blackout in Quebec.
But perhaps the largest known CME occurred just before noon on September 1, 1859, and lasted 8 days. The Carrington Event, named after the astronomer Richard Carrington who observed the solar activity as it occurred, caused significant disruption on Earth. According to scientists at the European Space Agency "The entire Earth was engulfed in a gigantic cloud of seething gas, and a blood red aurora erupted across the planet from the poles to the tropics. Around the world, telegraph systems crashed, machines burst into flames and electric shocks rendered operators unconscious. Compasses and other sensitive instruments reeled as if struck by a massive electric fist." For the first time in recorded history, people throughout the Caribbean were treated to spectacular displays of the Aurora Borealis. Of course, 1859 technology was quite low in comparison to today's technology, the telegraph had only been invented 15 years prior.
The earth is protected from the harmful effects of solar radiation by its magnetic field, called the magnetosphere. Cracks in the field were discovered in 2003 by both NASA and the European Space Agency and the cracks have since damaged satellites during transit through it.
If a CME event of the size and intensity that occurred ion 1859 happened today, it is estimated that the power grid will take between 2 and 10 years to be restored and the following effects will occur:
  • Municipal water will run out in 48 hours
  • Sewage systems will stop operating within 2 weeks
  • Refrigeration will immediately cease
  • Hospitals and nursing homes will experience a drastic increase in deaths due to shortages in medicine
  • Food will run out at the grocery stores with 3 days
  • 97% of all manufacturing will cease
  • Crop cultivation will decrease by 80%
  • Food riots and civil unrest will occur within 7 days
At Hardened Structures, we employ some of the world's best known EMP mitigation experts and designers. We can design your shelter to withstand almost any size EMP or Geomagnetic event.

Hardened Structures - Commercial Products

Commercial Products

Highly specific expertise for the commercial market

Commercial structures face differing levels of risk associated with CBRN threat, climate change and natural events, accidents or intentional (criminal or terrorist) events. The development of effective and efficient client/project-specific mitigation strategies requires the use of Risk Assessment. Risk is a combination of credible threats, vulnerability and consequence. Certain geographical areas have particular risk factors that affect facility capability need and placement such as population density, presence of critical infrastructure, location in a high terrorist threat or high natural disaster areas and military base/complex proximity.

Hardened Structures employs the latest Department of Homeland Defense and approved sensory and filtering equipment to protect commercial and government buildings. Hardened Structures is currently working to protect commercial and government facilities from the Mid-East to California.

The CBRN Threat

Counter-terrorism experts within the DHS, CDC, and NIOSH are vexed by commercial and public building vulnerability. An office building has a high concentration of human life encapsulated in a small space; an ideal target for today's merciless terrorist. The experts repeatedly identify the HVAC system as the most likely distribution point for a toxic attack.

Structural Hardening of Buildings and Structures

Innovative structural solutions are needed to "harden" new or existing commercial structures to accommodate client priorities. The Hardened Structures Team of specially trained independent design firms and general contractors has the required experience to design, engineer, and manage the construction of these specialized projects.

Hardened Structures - Fortified & Hardened Homes

Fortified & Hardened Homes
Hardened Structures has over 15 years of experience building shelters for the private sector.
"We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us."
- Sir Winston Churchill, British Statesman
Interactive Tour Diagram of a Fortified Home with bunker
Hardened Structures is a Professional Construction Program Management Firm specializing in the confidential planning, design and covert construction of FORTIFIED homes, underground "Genesis" shelter systems, homes with executive underground bunkers (shown right), survival communities, Shelters and Missile Silo Conversions. These facilities are designed with independent sources of power and water. They can serve as a primary dwelling, vacation home, corporate retreat, long term shelter or expanded multi-function compound. Client confidentiality and total project secrecy are paramount on all of our projects.
Our Team comprises of a core group of independent design firms and general contractors with specialized training in the unique design and construction requirements of Fortified Homes.

Balanced Survivability Design Approach

Because it is impossible to protect against all threats and hazards, adopting a "balanced approach" in designs that considers intended functions, threat mitigation, and budget, is imperative. This is where Hardened Structures experience and know-how separates our Team from the general purpose Architects and Engineers. Our Teams experience has shown there is no one-size-fits-all or formula of security features and programs that will ensure 100% safety against all violent attacks or natural disasters. Designers and owners must understand the limitations of designed facilities and proposed countermeasures. Mitigating measures or countermeasures are specified to meet a particular anticipated threat, not all possible threats.
At Hardened Structures our Team designs your facility to achieve a Balanced Survivability, ensuring that no one system or component is the "Achilles heel." No matter if it is Nuclear, Biological or Chemical war, armed assaults or EMP/HEMP, our experienced and highly specialized team of engineers, scientists and ex-Navy SEALS can confidentiality design and covertly construct your facility efficiently and cost effectively anywhere in the world.

Risk Assessment

Hardened Structures first steps in determining the feasibility of constructing a "HARDENED" home in a specific location is to completely understand our Client's priorities/goals/budget, thoroughly examine the site and its surroundings, be fully aware of all regulatory agencies having jurisdiction and to conduct a full Risk Assessment. This is completed using our proprietary "Confidential Client Interview Form". Once this information has been assimilated and agreed upon the development of the Hardened Structures Feasibility Study can be completed and submitted. This study is a condition precedent to establishing a Program of Requirements, which then allows the Client to modify the Program or continue to the next phases. The planning, design and construction of a Hardened Structure is technically specific and complex and is executed through the following phases:
  • Feasibility Study
  • Protection Program
  • Design Documents
  • Permitting (if requested)
  • Pre- Construction
  • Construction
  • Client
  • Move-in
  • Systems Orientation
